Zan thought about her question for a minute. What did he like about this place? There were fewer people than Royal Oak but more than where he used to live with his mom and they were usually the same people. He also really liked the area and the way that it was set up. "Well... it's not too crowded and there aren’t too many people or too few. It has a nice atmosphere to it and there are nice places to go. I'll admit that it's not the perfect town, but what is?" He knew that there were more reasons why, but he couldn't really describe them. He just liked it here.
"So, what do you like about San Francisco?" he asked. He had been there once, on a trip with his dad. It had been alright, for a city and parts of it were cool, but overall he didn't like it very much, so he wanted to know why she did.
Keiko had gotten bored with his rope toy and had stopped chewing on it a little while ago. He was now started to want some more attention, so he laid his head in Zan lap. Zan gently scratched him behind his ear.

Claire listened as Zan gave off a few things that he liked about Lipton. He seemed to genuinely like Lipton, as if he weren't just saying that because it were his home. Having lived a few other places in his lifetime, though, Claire imagined that he had much more experience to compare Lipton to than she herself had. All she had was her beloved hometown, and the occasional stay at New York City. And, those weren't exactly good comparisons. One block of either of those cities probably had half the people of this entire town.
"Where do you like to go here? I mean, Google only gave like ten places in the entire town." Claire stated, after he had explained. If she had to be stuck here for two years and seven months she might as well find somewhere to go. She wasn't about to stay home with Jaycee, Amanda and her father. She couldn't handle that.
"Everything," Claire instantly replied, though she knew that wasn't true. She liked that it wasn't Lipton; she liked that it was her home town; she liked her friends there, her school, her everything. But, she knew that wasn't the actual city or realistic things to tell Zan. "It's so warm there. People are always moving, and there's always something new to do. Plus, there's so much... culture?" Claire replied with a shrug. She was certain San Francisco had culture, but she didn't overly care about that. It just seemed like a good thing to say.

"The park and the beach mostly" he answered, "and if you go out of town a few miles there's some really cool mountains." It occurred to him that that might not have been what she meant by places to go. She might have been thinking more on the lines of social places, like Zan had heard most people did, but Zan didn't usually go to that type of place.
"It's fairly warm here too" Zan told her. "It's also cold sometimes but it's nice to have both kinds of weather." It sounded like Claire was a fan of warm weather, but Zan didn't see any problem with having both. He wasn't sure what exactly she meant by people always moving, but it sounded like they would get in each other's way. "So what is there to do there?" he asked.

Zan's ideal list of places to hang out weren't quite what Claire had expected. Most teens would have rattled off things like pizza shops, stores, or party hot spots. And, while parties didn't seem like Zan's thing, Claire figured he'd at least had a few hot spots he could name. Was this town really so bad that the park or some mountains seemed interesting? Claire frowned lightly. "Well... the beach sounds nice."
Californian weather was rather consistent, usually on the warmer side of things. The mid-forties felt cold, so she had to admit that she was nervous to be somewhere where the weather fluctuated a bit more. "That's going to take some getting used to. I can't imagine winters being very cold." Claire replied, sincerely. She was a warm weather fan, and she knew that when they made it to winter here, she would struggle more than ever to adjust.
"What isn't there to do?" She responded almost instantly to Zan's question. "There's some of the best beaches, nicest malls, and most amazing food ever! We have skating rinks, discos, and pretty much every type of carnival known to the world!" And that was only the beginning. There was an advantage to living in a huge city like San Francisco. There as never a dull moment at all. She didn't know how much Zan would appreciate her favorite activities there, since he seemed more outdoors-oriented. But, they had parks for people like him, too. She loved it there.

"I can understand that. I spent the first eight years of my life living in Texas and when I moved to Michigan, it was kind of cold and it wasn't long until I saw snow for the first time, and slipped on ice for the first time. It can get pretty cold here in Colorado too, but not quite as much and really cold temperatures don't last as long."
Claire got really excited when she listed off the places to go and things to do in San Francisco, although none of the things she mentioned sounded all that great to Zan. "That's cool" he replied. Zan could tell that she loved it there and was loyal to her town. She must have been unhappy about needing to move. When Zan had first been told that he would have to move, he had been really excited. The second time he wasn't as happy about it but he didn't mind. Although, in both places that Zan had moved from, he hadn't been leaving behind anything that he loved.

Zan seemed to have seen most the extremes of the states. He had lived in Texas, Michigan, and now here in Colorado. There was quite the variety between the states. Claire wasn't sure that she could of handled moving so many times; she was barely able to convince herself to go along with her father's plans to move once In fact, she wasn't sure she was convinced about it yet. "That's reassuring, at least," Claire replied as he stated the cold didn't last long.
A random thought hit her at the mention of snow and ice. She was curious about them. The tiny bits of snow she had seen in Times Square probably didn't count for much. She didn't play in it. She didn't really even acknowledge it had existed. It was just something to add to the chill of Times Square on New Years Eve. Plus, she had been much younger, hardly remembering it because she had been too excited to see the big crystal ball drop. "Have you been ice skating?" She questioned, a bit randomly. "Yeah" he replied. His dad took him ice skating sometimes. It was usually fun. They would play games and race each other but they weren't usually very careful and Zan once tripped and fell and the blade went into his skin and gashed blood. He was fairly clam about it, probably because his mother taught him to have a high pain tolerance, but his dad kind of freaked out. Since then they were always more careful when they went skating.
"Have you?" Zan asked. He assumed that she had because she had motioned skating rinks, but then it occurred to him that she could have meant roller instead of ice.

"I haven't," Claire admitted, as he returned her question. She liked to think of herself as a professional roller blader, but she had never had the guts to go on the ice. There wasn't an ice skating rink super close to her old house, and she didn't want to make the long bus journey to it, so she had just went without. And, after hearing of various accidents and injuries that happened on the ice, she had just never mustered up the courage to try. It would be fun, she was sure, but she had never gotten around to it.
"I think it would be awesome to try sometime, though. Is there a rink around here, or do you just skate on a pond when it freezes over?" It didn't sound very safe to go skating on the pond, but it would still be fun, if you were to do it. She didn't even know if it got cold enough for ponds to freeze over here or not. She had never really thought about it until just now.

"Yeah" he answered. "There's one." He had skated at the rink sometimes but he had never skated on a frozen pound. "Not many people skate on natural pounds though. My dad says it's because it's too hard to know if the ice is hard enough to skate on and not break though" he explained. It was easier to just go to the skating rink. Zan had a desire to skate on a natural pound, but he had never told anyone.
"So have you ever been roller blading?" Zan asked, assuming that, since she had never been ice skating before, that's what she meant by skating rinks. He had been to a roller blading rink once but he didn't like the atmosphere. It was too crowded and they tried to set it up like a party. He preferred the ice rink where it was more clam. Roller blading outside was fun though.

Zan mentioned that there was, indeed, an ice skating rink in town. She would have to check it out sometime, though she didn't really see herself ice skating. Everyone had the things they were afraid of. For Claire, she was afraid of both dogs and ice skating. Two rather weird fears, but both were equally terrifying to her. It was just one of her quirks.
"I was practically a professional roller blader," Claire laughed, only partially joking. She dabbled in a handful of sports and hobbies that her atheltic ability only took her so far in. With roller blading, however, she was quite talented. Dancing was her other passion. That was probably why she loved roller skating rinks. They made it feel like a club or dance party on wheels.
And then a horrifying thought hit her. What if Lipton didn't have a roller skating rink? "I hope there's a rink around here. Surely a town this small can at least handle that?" Sure, she could skate on the streets or sidewalks, but it just wasn't the same. Not in the slightest. She knew Zan had said that he ice skated, but she wondered if he also roller skated. The two were similar, yes, but also quite different.

“Really?” he replied, thinking that it wasn’t really possible to be a professional roller bladder. He wondered what she met by that. Was she really fast? Could she do fancy tricks? He wanted to know. "I hope I get to see you skate sometime" he told her, “and yeah there's a skating rink. It tends to be a little crowded and noisy though." He felt like he should warn her, although he knew that, strangely, some people liked that.
It seemed odd for her to be calling Lipton a small town. Zan had seen bigger, but this seemed like a semi-big town to Zan. If she thought Lipton was small, she should see the first place he lived in, although that wasn't really a town.

"Yeah," Claire replied, with a nod of confirmation. She knew she probably sounded a tad arrogant, but she liked to think of it as confidence. It was one of the few things that she knew she was good at. She wasn't the best, but she was definitely good. And, the fact that Lipton had a rink was at least a little reassuring. It would make the next two years and seven months semi-more bearable.
At Zan's words, Claire offered up a genuine small smile. Zan wasn't so bad. Even if he lived in possibly one of the world's most awful towns. "We could go skate some time, or something?" It would probably be the only time she would actual offer to hang out with someone in the town. But, she supposed that she needed at least one ally if she was stuck here. And, Zan was interesting.
He didn't seem too fond of the idea of a skating rink, however, so Claire doubted that he would be up for it. Which, was fine. She didn't want to get attached to the town, anyhow, and she was more than happy to go by herself if it really came to that. [/blockquote]

"Ok" Zan agreed. He was really excited at this invitation. He may not have been a big fan of roller rinks, but they weren't horrible and they could be fun sometimes and it wasn't often that other kids would invite him to do things with them.
He knew that Claire was new in town, so he figured that she would find other friends and then not want to hang out with him anymore, but maybe not. Either way, he's take it while it lasted. He liked her, even though she didn’t like dogs, and she seemed nice.

Claire was rather surprised as Zan agreed to her invitation with a simple okay. She hadn't expected him to agree. He didn't seem to like the skating rinks, from the way he spoke. Plus, she wasn't sure she would agree to her invite either. She had showed up here -what, twenty minutes ago?- and had invited herself up to pretty much interrogate him. If she had been in Zan's shoes, she would have been pretty freaked out.
She wasn't, though, and Zan had said yes, regardless of the reasoning. Claire was semi-thankful for this. Her blunt, but curious nature had always made it difficult to make friends. She wouldn't say that she didn't have any friends, but she had never really stumbled into more once she had made her initial group of friends back in elementary school. While she wouldn't consider Zan and she friends yet, it as nice to know she at least knew someone.
"Great." Claire smiled what was, perhaps, her most genuine smile of the night. "And, maybe I'll even tag along to the ice skating rink or something sometime, too." She shrugged, not really sure how she felt about her own suggestion. But, it seemed like a good thing to say. [/blockquote]

"So when do you want to go to the roller rink?" Zan asked. He would be ok with the idea of going right now, but she might not want to go tomorrow, or in a few days, for some reason. Either way was fine with him.
He hoped that she would keep her offer of going to the ice rink skating one time, but he had a feeling that she wasn't and that she might have just made it up.
Zan had only been to a roller rink once in his lifetime and he didn't like it very much, but it was tolerable and it seemed to him like Claire would.
