Cats did have a rather standoff-ish personality. Even her cat hated to be around her after just a short. It was only natural, Claire supposed. She hated people after a while too. It took a special kind of person to like cats, and Claire mainly liked them since she had little use for dogs. They were a companion of some sort, "Yeah, that'd make sense. I mean, cats don't really like dogs and you're always with Keiko." She shrugged.
As Zan stopped in front of the skating rink, Claire stopped next to him. She took it in, noting almost immediately that it was smaller than the one back home. But, really, she was just thankful that Lipton had a skating rink. "Well, what are we waiting for?" Giving the first genuine smile of the day to Zan, she then turned and skated on into the building. She only stopped once she reached the front counter. And, after a blunt conversation with the person at the desk, she then went on to the small wall around the hardwood floor to wait on Zan to catch up. It was relatively crowded, but not awful. And Claire was feeling somewhat excited all of a sudden.

The biggest probable with the skating arena was that you had to pay to enter. The women at the front desk asked Zan for five dollars. Zan didn't mind that he had to pay if he wanted to buy something, but he didn't like paying for use of space. He got out his wallet and paid her anyway, even though he hadn’t even wanted to go here.
Zan skated into the rink. He had been here only once before and it was really crowded. It was crowded again today, but not as much. He had been hoping that there wouldn't be many people here, since it was the middle of the day, but it didn't work out that way.
He stood next to Claire, a little unsure of what to do next. They would probably end up skating in the crowed. Zan hoped that he would be able to get in the middle of the arena. There weren't many people there.

The floor of the rink was excessively crowded for such a small town. Really, Claire found it exciting. It was similar to her real home back in San Francisco. All the noise and commotion may have bothered others, but she honestly didn't mind it. The lights were dimmed, obnoxious colors of lights being flashed around the floor, and people were skating to a familiar pop song. It was all just so much like home, and she couldn't help but to smile.
As Zan joined her, Claire couldn't help but to notice Zan's uncomfortable stance. As she had been all day, however, she brushed it away with little thought. She reached for Zan's arm, happy to guide him on to the crowded rink floor. She merged in with the other skaters before letting the boy go. "Thanks for coming, Zan. This will be fun." Claire had to speak rather loudly to get her voice over the loud song going in the background. She had almost forgotten how loud skating rinks could be. It had been a while since she even had visited the rink back at home, but the familiarity was rushing back to her now.

Zan grew even more nervous when Claire grabbed his arm, but he went along with her. He didn't feel much relief when she let him go, because he had gotten stuck in the crowed. He figured there was no way of avoiding it now. He was just going to have to be careful.
Zan kept on guard as he skated next to her, nervously. He wondered how he had possible ended up here, and then Claire thanked him for coming and he realized that she was how. Zan forced a smile when Claire called it fun, although clearly her idea of fun was different from his.

Claire was happy to merge right in with the crowds. Though she wasn't overly open with people, she definitely didn't mind being in large groups of people. It probably came from the fact that she was born and raised in one of the largest cities in the states. It was hard to go anywhere without a huge crowd of people around you.
Looking over to Zan, however, Claire could read the discomfort on his face. She didn't get it, but she and Zan came from very different backgrounds, so she supposed it made sense. "You can decide what we do next." Shrugging, Claire almost felt obligated to offer this. She didn't want to go back to the house, and Zan seemed nice enough, so why not hang out a bit more.

"What?" Zan asked, surprised. He was quite sure what he had heard. He had thought that she had told him to decide what they would do next, but they had just gotten here so he didn't think they would leave already, although he wanted too. This was a decision that he didn't want to make anyway. He had just met Claire and he couldn't make decisions with people who he didn't know very well.
If Zan had his choice of what to do, he would choose to go home and play with Keiko while he waited for his dad to get home from work. He glanced at his watch and saw that he had almost two hours before his dad usually got home.

"You can decide what we do next." Claire repeated flatly. Already having decided that she and Zan were going to hang out. She shrugged, not really feeling like it was the most awkward assumption. They'd already spent quite a bit of time together and they were neighbors now. With just three houses between them and with them being the same age, Claire knew it was inevitable that they'd cross paths more often than they'd like. Might as well become accustomed to it now.
Continuing to skate next to him, she shrugged. "Unless you had somewhere you needed to be?" It wasn't so much of a question as more of something she knew she should say. She could come on a little strong, probably imposing herself on the boy. But, that was just Claire. She tended to act or speak first and worry about the results of which later. Zan seemed to be the opposite. He seemed more withdrawn, less blunt, even, so she really didn't know how he would feel about her bluntness. But, Claire had already decided she wasn't out to make friends, just acquaintances, so did it really matter?

Zan didn't like being given this decision. He couldn't possibly decide on something for them both to do because he had just met Claire and didn't know her well enough to know what she would like to do.
He thought about it fora bit, but he couldn't come up with anything. "I don't know" he answered. He thought about claiming that he had stuff that he needed to do, but that would be a lie and he didn't like lies. He hated it when people lied to him, so he preferred to be truthful to other people.

It was almost amusing at how she and Zan had gotten along this long. Their personalities were so different. Claire was assertive, willing to just voice ideas for them to do. Zan, on the other hand, seemed very uncertain about mentioning anything. "Oh, come on," Claire smirked lightly, "There has to be something you're into. I mean, I know this is like the world's smallest town, but you're not super into skating... so you have to do something for fun."
She knew she probably came off as a bit bossy, but that had always been her thing. Plus, she wanted an excuse to stay out of the house, and the busy skating rink could only keep them busy for so long. If it hadn't been for her desire to stay as far away from her new home as possible, she doubted that she and Zan would even be here right now. She might as well humor him and let him decide what to do next, though Zan didn't seem to be as fond as that idea as she was. Maybe they would end up spending the entire day in the skating rink, after all.
[ hey! i'm super sorry that this took me forever to get to. i had finals and end of the semester projects that took up most all my time. so, again, sorry for the wait! ]

Zan thought that Claire must be hopelessly confused if she thought that this was the worlds smallest town. He spent that first eight years of his life that was so small, he didn't even know if it counted as a town. He almost told her this but he decided not to because he didn't want to make her upset or anything.
Zan thought about it, knowing that he should come up with something. "Well we could go and get Keiko and then walk to the park or the beach or something" he suggested, hoping that it wasn't a lame suggestion. Then he remembered that Claire didn't like dogs and that maybe he shouldn't of mentioned getting Keiko.

As Zan finally came up with a suggest, Claire felt the light smirk she wore falter. It probably would have been the reasonable thing to assume that Zan was going to suggest they hang out with Keiko, but she'd always had this irrational fear of dogs. If you asked her why, she probably couldn't even tell you. She'd really never been around them much. And, when she was, it was mostly just in passing and typically only small dogs of her father's clients. Keiko was definitely a lot bigger than those dogs. Claire didn't even like them, however, so Keiko really didn't stand much of a chance.
She skated a head of him just a bit, deciding that she didn't want him to see her lose her cool. "We can go for a walk," She agreed, casually avoiding mentioning Keiko. "Do you like the beach or the park better?" Once again, her expectations for either place were set fairly low. Claire didn't have high expectations for this small town at all. It definitely wasn't San Francisco; it was about the farthest thing from it, in Claire's eyes.

"Probably the park" Zan answered, noticing that she seemed to be avoiding the mention of Keiko. "So can Keiko come, or are you still afraid of him?" Zan asked. He understood why other people were afraid of Wolfie, but Keiko was a lot different from her. "He's never hurt anyone, so you shouldn't be."
Zan had taken the fact that Claire was afraid of Keiko almost as a personal insult, but maybe he was being a little hard on her. He was afraid of stoves and anything burning, and basically everybody thought that was irrational until Zan or his dad explained. Maybe Claire had been attacked by a dog when she was a kid.

Claire nodded as Zan said the park. She hadn't been there, yet, and she was curious as to what their park looked like. With her love of sports, she was certain that she'd spend a lot of time there, so it was probably a smart choice. Much to Claire's dislike, Zan went on to mention Keiko again. She shifted on her skates rather awkwardly. She hated the idea of admitting that she was afraid, especially over something as silly as a dog.
"I..." Claire tensed, a bit defensive. Obviously, Zan had picked up on her irrational fear of the dog from her behavior throughout the day. "I'm not afraid of him." She stated, trying to sound confident, though her words seemed more defensive than anything. She almost felt bad for the lie, but she didn't want to seem like a complete loser to the boy. Even if she had no intentions of making friends in Lipton, she was still stuck here, and she didn't want to be strange. Still avoiding directly answering his question, Claire shifted her gaze down to her skates. She didn't want to say yes, but she didn't want to tell Zan he couldn't bring the dog, either. It was just easier to leave it up to him.

"You not" Zan replied, believing her and thinking that he was a moron. "I'm sorry. I thought you were. Do you not like him or something?" he asked. He wondered why. He couldn't understand how anyone could not like Keiko, unless maybe if they had some sort of fear of dogs.
He hoped they could leave soon. This place was too crowded and Zan had to be constantly on guard. When Claire was talking, he had to listen really closely because it was so noisy. Zan liked Claire, but he was getting a little annoyed at her and he didn't really want to be around her anymore. It might be the skating rink that was bothering him and not her, but he wouldn't know until they left.

Claire had always been a bit on the defensive side. She wasn't even sure why. The smallest of things could cause her to get defensive. And, maybe a fear of dogs wasn't something to be defensive about, but it didn't seem like a normal fear either. It was irrational, and dumb. Zan hadn't seemed to notice the edge to her voice, so she decided to just go along with her lie. "No."
A simple response, but Claire left it at that. The exit to the rink was quickly approaching, and Claire swung a sharp left, skating off of it. Once her skates left the hardwood floor of the rink, she slowed herself, before looking back to Zan. He almost seemed to feel guilty about the matter, which again caused her to tense. She didn't want him to feel guilty about it. She didn't know what she wanted. "Let's... go get the dog." She suggested, almost hesitantly, again avoiding his question about Keiko. "And then go to the park?"
