Zan thought that Claire's statement, although cliché, wasn't completely accurate. He had found that if he would practice at something too long then he skills would start to decrees. He didn't tell her this though, because he didn't want to run the risk of upsetting her. Not only did he want her to like him, but he knew that most people, especially females, could be very unpleasant and sometimes dangerous when upset.
"Your right" Zan replied. "It does. I just wasn't really into it enough to work very hard at being good." He had always preferred to work on doing well in things that he cared more about, which he assumed was normal. "So do you practice at dancing a lot?" he asked.

"Makes sense," Claire agreed with a small shrug as Zan agreed with her remark on practicing. At least he had tried; that was what counted. Everyone couldn't be good at everything, after all. His next question brought a slightly more genuine statement to her face once again.
"I don't really consider it practicing," She explained, "but, you could say that. It was kinda my life." With her father often working long hours or making several long journeys to clients throughout the state, their house was pretty vacant back home. "I was at the studio like all the time. It was a lot of fun." While Claire had some friends she could have spent more time with, she usually had just ended up spending more hours in the dance studio. It was almost like her second home. Her best friend had been equally involved in the program, so it had just worked out for the best that way. Now that she was in Lipton, she was really hoping that there was a dance program of some sort to be involved in. Otherwise, it would be an even longer two years and seven months that she had to suffer through.

Zan skated next to her. He kept on going a little sower or faster than them, but he was able to fix it and keep pace. He wished he had brought Keiko. Zan was used to having his dog beside him.
Zan listened as Claire expressed her love for dancing. "Cool" he told her, although that wasn't really his cup of tea. "You must have enjoyed that."
"There's a dance studio somewhere around here." Zan told her. He had never been in it, didn't know that name of it, or even where it was. He had just walked past it a couple of times.

Claire simply nodded as Zan stated that she must have liked it. She really did. Since her dad worked such long hours a lot of the time and it were just the two of them, the dance studio had been her home away from home. Now that they were in Lipton, Claire was certain it would be the same here. She had no desire to get to know her step-mother or her step-sister at all. That meant she'd take any excuse to be out of the house as possible.
"Really?" An excited tone suddenly laced her voice. She adjusted her speed so that she were just a tad ahead of Zan now, skating at a slight angle to mainly focus back on him. It wasn't the safest, but it gave her a better view of the boy. "That's super exciting. Have you tried dance before? If not, you totally should." Zan didn't really seem like a dancer, but Claire knew that you couldn't always judge people by their appearance. Some of the best dances came from the most unlikely people. And, dance was more about having fun than being good. Though, Claire was more than happy to be good at it, too.

"No I have not" Zan answered. It had never really been something that interested him and he wished he could change the topic but he didn’t know how. He wasn't any good at things like that.
He wished he had Keiko with him. Keiko always made him feel more conferrable about things, but he couldn't because Claire didn't like dogs. He found it surprising that someone could dislike dogs, but then it occurred to him that he only liked the dogs who were his friends and that did not include most dogs. Some dogs, like Wolfie, were usually only friendly to people that they knew and considered part of their pack. These were probably the dogs that Claire had met, although Keiko wasn't that type of dog. Instead of disliking everyone until they gave him a reason to like them, Keiko liked everyone until they gave him a reason to dislike them.

"You totally should. I could teach you sometime," Claire offered, almost immediately. Dance was the one thing that seemingly brought her out of her shell a bit more. While she still wasn't overly open, she was a tad more willing when it came to dance. But, she also knew it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. Zan definitely didn't seem too interested in the matter. So, as the conversation seemed to die, she let them skate in silence for a few moments.
But, in typical Claire fashion, she couldn't resist asking him something or talking after just a few moments. She wracked her mind for something to stem from for a few moments, to pull Zan back into the conversation. She was still rather curious about him. He was far from typical. "So, you're obviously not a dancer," She stated lightly, "so, what hobbies do you have, then?" For a moment, she wondered if he would tire of her questions, but that was a fleeting thought. If he cared, he could always refuse to answer. Which, would probably just provoke more questions from Claire, but she'd get the hint sooner or later. It really wasn't a top concern for her.

"Maybe" he answer, when Claire offered to teach him some dance. He usually liked trying new things, but he didn't have much enthusiasm for this. He had seen dancing before. It didn't interest him and it seemed like more a girl a thing then a guy thing.
He thought for a bit, when she asked him what his hobbies were. "Well, I like going for walks and bike rides and playing with Keiko, shooting hoops and playing card games" he answered. "Tell me some of your hobbies, other than dancing and roller blading."
Zan saw that they were almost to the roller rink. It was about a block away. He wasn't sure if that was good or bad.

Zan still didn't seem too excited about the dancing matter, but Claire didn't mind. She was still excited about it. She let the conversation die, though, skating ahead of the boy just a bit when she could see the rather large building that she assumed to be the roller rink start to appear ahead.
She skated at a bit of an angle, only slightly ahead of Zan now as she listened to him rattle off some hobbies. The dog, Keiko, seemed to be a rather important part of his life. Which, she had assumed, but it was becoming more apparent. "What kind of card games?" She inquired, at the mention of them, deciding to disregard the dog for now.
"I like most sports," Claire added in, when he inquired about her own hobbies. "And, I have a cat." She added this rather lamely, figuring that was the only pet that she really had to compare to Keiko. Not that her cat was near as loyal as Keiko seemed to be. Originally, it was just company for her dad or herself when the other was away. But, like any pet, it had become a part of the family and had moved to Lipton with them.

"Kings Corners, Rummy, Speed" he answered, "that sort of stuff." Zan and his dad often played games with each other, in the evenings. Most of Zan's favorites were card games. They were simple, but fun and he liked how you could do so many different things with one deck of cards.
"My dad has two cats’" he told her. They had never liked Zan or Keiko very much, although they had learned to tolerate them, and they much preferred Zan's father. The cats had both been strays, picked up at different times over the years. Zan didn't have much trouble comparing himself to the stray cats, but he had never mentioned this to his father, although he told his dad almost everything.

Claire nodded at his words. She'd never really played cards all that much growing up. She knew a few games, and the basics. But, being an only child and really preferring just having a handful of friends tended to limit the amount of group games you played. She couldn't really recall having ever played any of the games he listed, but she also didn't know many card games by names. "Sounds... fun?" It came out as more of a question than she would have liked, but not knowing how to play really didn't give her anything else to go off of. For a moment, she thought about suggesting he teach her, but then she stopped herself.
As Zan's next words came, Claire nodded once more. She figured Zan was probably more of a dog person, just because of Keiko. People generally tended to be either a cat fan or a dog fan, seldom both. "Are they and Keiko your only pets?" Cats really gave people less to talk about. Usually, Claire didn't even mention her beloved cat, Madagascar, to people at all. It just seemed like something to throw in there.

Claire didn't seem very interested when Zan talked about his favorite card games, but he hadn't been very interested when she was talking about dancing, so maybe now they were even. Not everybody can be interested in everything.
"Yeah" Zan answered, although he didn't consider the cats his pets. He hardly considered Keiko a pet. "So, what's your cat’s name?" Zan asked. His dad had named his cats Piper and Lady, which Zan thought were ok names but not great names, like the middle name that his father had picked out for him. Although the main reason that he liked his middle name was that it was his father’s first name.

"Madagascar." Claire responded, almost immediately at Zan's question. She then proceeded to smile to herself. It was a weird name, she had to admit that. Most people didn't use it for a cat or any pet. But, that was part of the reason Claire had choose it. She had always thought her cat to be strange anyhow, so it just kind of worked.
"You know, like that kid movie? The one with the lion and zebra and... some other zoo animals." The second movie had come out about the time she had got her cat. Having never had to name anything before, she had tried to make it as painless as possible and had just gone with the first thing that seemed to fit the cat -which had then been little more than a ball of fluff. The name had just kind of stuck after she'd jokingly suggested it, and she had never really thought to change it. "I know it's kind of weird. But, what about your cats? Do they have any cool names?" This question came almost naturally. Zan's name was fairly unusual, as was his dog's. So, of course, she had to ask this.

"My dad cat's" he corrected, "are named Lady and Piper." Piper got his name because, when Mr. Kirks had found him, his tail had been caught in a pipe, which he had luckily been able to get out, without any damage to Piper's tail. Lady got her name because she was female and she acted in a lady like manner, which Zan had never been able to understand.
When Zan was a little boy, he used to watch the other children play with each other, although he had never played with them, and he had named Keiko and all of his siblings after words that were commonly said in children’s games, which consisted of Tag, Ball, Prince and Keiko. Keiko had sounded like it was an island in some sort of imaginary game. They might not have been the most appropriate name for Keiko, but Zan couldn't imagine calling him anything else. It was like how Keiko's mom had been named Wolfie even though she was a husky dog and not a Wolfie, although Zan had mistaken her for one when she was a toddler.

Claire couldn't help but to notice how Zan corrected her wording. He didn't seem to be fond of the cats. She and her dad interchangeably referred to Madagascar as 'my cat' or 'our cat,' really making no differentiation between who's cat he really was. She wondered if he just didn't like cats, or if his family just worked differently than hers. She assumed it was probably the latter. Zan was rather interesting to Claire as it was, so it really wouldn't surprise her if they were just different in that aspect. She read a bit too far into things sometimes.
"That's... cute." She liked Keiko's name a tad better, mostly because she was into the strange names, but she didn't voice this. Instead, She gave a light smirk, nodding slightly with his words. As always, Claire didn't hold back from asking any question that came to mind. Which, this time, concerned his correction a few moments before. "Do you not like the cats or something?" Her gaze shifted momentarily back to Zan before she slowly her pace again, skating next to him before she turned her gaze away.

"I sort of like the cats" Zan explained. "Mainly, they’re just not very friendly to me. They'll tolerate me and Keiko, but they mainly only like my dad." His dad had told him that it was mainly Keiko that they didn't like so, since Keiko was usually with him, they didn't like Zan very much either. Zan wasn't sure why they didn't like Keiko. Maybe they discriminated against him because he was a dog, which was incredibly unfair. Keiko had never even tried to do anything to harm them.
When they reached the skating rink, Zan stopped in front of it. "Here we are" he said.
